Can You Read Any PDF on Kindle? What Works and How to Improve It

14/10/2026

You can open any PDF file on a Kindle, but most PDFs display as fixed pages—so the text is often small and hard to read, especially with notes, textbooks, or scanned books. Kindle doesn’t reflow PDF text to fit the screen like it does with Kindle book formats (AZW3, EPUB). If you want to read class notes, comics, or lengthy PDFs comfortably, converting the file to a reflowable format or comic format is your best bet. Tools like Legible can help with this.

How Does a PDF Look on Kindle?

When you open a PDF on Kindle, it shows the page as a fixed image: you can’t increase the font size, only zoom in or pan around the page. On models like the Paperwhite, an A4 page shrinks so much that 12-point text may look less than half its normal size, making reading tiring. This applies to notes, scanned books, and comics in PDF format.

You can zoom with two fingers or rotate the screen, but the layout stays fixed—text won’t adjust to fit the screen.

Which PDFs Work Well on Kindle—and Which Don’t?

How to Improve PDF Reading on Kindle

To make the text fit your screen, convert the PDF to a Kindle book format (AZW3 or EPUB). This gives you reflowable text, lets you increase font size, and provides a usable table of contents. For comics, converting to a Kindle-specific format, trimming margins, and fitting the size for your device can make reading easier.

Legible is a web tool for this: upload your PDF and it converts it to reflowable text, preserving headings, bold, lists, indents, and joining words split across lines. If your PDF has two columns, it reads them in the right order. For scanned files, it uses OCR to turn images into text (in Spanish, English, or Portuguese). It also creates an automatic table of contents—even if your PDF doesn’t have one—and shows a preview before you download your book.

For comics, Legible accepts PDF, CBZ, CBR, and similar files, trims margins, splits double pages, and resizes everything for your Kindle model. It also offers a color option for Kindle Colorsoft. This prepares comics for your device, but depending on the original layout, you may still need to zoom for some panels.

You can download the finished book as AZW3 (for cable transfer) or EPUB (for Send to Kindle, which converts it to a Kindle book format). For details on transferring files, see How to Transfer Files to Kindle by Cable or Internet.

What About Send to Kindle or Calibre?

Send to Kindle lets you send PDF and EPUB files to your Kindle from your browser, app, or by email. If the PDF is complex (with columns, headings, or scans), the text may get mixed up or lack a table of contents. Amazon tries to convert the PDF to reflowable text if you put "convert" in the email subject, but results vary (see details).

Calibre is useful for managing your library and converting EPUB to AZW3, but with complex PDFs, it often cuts up lines, loses headings, and doesn’t handle columns or tables of contents well (more info).

Summary: Can You Read Any PDF on Kindle?

You can open any PDF on your Kindle, but your reading experience depends on the file type. Simple PDFs display well, but notes, scans, and comics are usually uncomfortable to read. For a better experience, convert PDFs to reflowable text or comic format with a tool like Legible to make the most of your Kindle’s reading features.
