How to Read PDFs, Notes, Scans, and Comics on the Kindle Oasis

13/10/2026

You can read PDFs, notes, scans, and comics on the Kindle Oasis, but your reading experience will depend on the format and how you prepare your files. The Oasis features a 7-inch screen with a resolution of 1264 × 1680 pixels in grayscale, which affects how text and images are displayed. Here’s what you need to know for each type of file and how to get the most out of your device.

What happens if you open a regular PDF on the Kindle Oasis?

If you load a PDF directly onto your Kindle Oasis—either by cable or using Send to Kindle—the file appears as a fixed page. The entire page is shrunk to fit the screen, so if your PDF is in A4 size, the text will be much smaller and often hard to read. Reading long notes or books this way usually means you'll need to zoom in and move the page around. The zoom works with two fingers, but the page remains fixed, not reflowable text.

This setup can work for short documents or files with lots of graphics, but for longer notes or books, it’s much better to convert your files to a Kindle-friendly format with reflowable text.

Why convert PDFs to Kindle format?

Kindle books (AZW3 or EPUB) use reflowable text, so you can adjust the font size and the text automatically fits the screen. On the Oasis, this makes reading much more comfortable and takes full advantage of the device’s 1264 × 1680 pixel resolution. The "Go to" menu lets you jump between chapters if the file has a table of contents.

To convert your notes or PDFs, you can use Legible—a web-based tool where you just drag and drop your file at this page. Legible rebuilds your PDF as a Kindle book, keeping headings, lists, and fixing common issues like hyphenated words. If your PDF is a scan, it runs OCR in Spanish, English or Portuguese. You can preview the finished book page by page before downloading. When you’re done, download the AZW3 to transfer by cable or the EPUB to send via Send to Kindle. The first three downloads are free.

Alternatively, you can try Calibre to convert PDF to AZW3, but according to its manual, it doesn’t handle complex PDFs well—especially those with multiple columns or lots of graphics—and often loses headings and the table of contents. For more details, see Why Calibre Cuts Up Lines When Converting PDF to Kindle. If your PDF is a scan, see How to Convert a Scanned PDF to Kindle (OCR).

How do you transfer the converted file to the Kindle Oasis?

With both options, you get reflowable text and can use the dictionary, highlight, and adjust font size as you like.

How do comics or manga look on the Oasis?

The Kindle Oasis displays images in grayscale with a resolution of 1264 × 1680 pixels, so comics and manga appear with good detail. However, the Kindle doesn’t open CBZ, CBR, or image ZIP files directly—these need to be converted first.

With Legible, you can drop comics in CBZ, CBR, CB7, ZIP, or PDF format. The app trims margins, splits double pages, and resizes images to fit the Oasis’s screen. The finished file is downloaded as a PDF (for comics) or AZW3, depending on your needs. For more about preparing comics for Kindle, see How to Read Comics and Manga on Kindle (CBZ and CBR).

Another option for comics is Kindle Comic Converter (KCC), a free and open-source program designed for various Kindle models (see on GitHub).

What difference does the Oasis screen make?

The Kindle Oasis has a larger screen than the basic Kindle, which helps a bit with large PDFs, but fixed pages are still shrunk unless you convert them. For long texts, reflowable formats are always easier to read. Comics look good in grayscale and the high resolution helps with detail, but keep in mind the Oasis is not a color device.

In summary, if you want to read notes, scanned PDFs, or comics on your Kindle Oasis, it’s best to convert them first to a Kindle-friendly format. Legible makes the process easy and lets you correct the table of contents and preview before downloading. Once you have your EPUB or AZW3 file ready, simply transfer it by cable or internet and enjoy reading on your Oasis’s large, comfortable screen.
