If you want to upload a PDF to your Kindle and read it comfortably—with adjustable font size and flowing text—there are a few ways to do it, depending on your Kindle model and the type of PDF. This guide explains how to send a PDF to your Kindle and how to improve it with tools like Legible, so your text isn’t stuck as a tiny, fixed page.
When you send a PDF to your Kindle, it usually appears as a fixed page: the whole sheet shrunk to fit the screen. On most models, this means the text is often too small to read comfortably, and zooming only shows part of the page. Kindle does not automatically turn PDFs into books with adjustable text unless you convert them first.
By default, PDFs stay as fixed pages on Kindle. To make the text adjustable, you need to convert the PDF to a Kindle book format (AZW3 or EPUB). When you do this, the text flows, font size can be changed, and the book is much easier to read.
Legible is a web converter made in Argentina that turns PDFs into Kindle books with flowing text. It works in your browser—no installation needed—and handles notes, scans, comics, and college materials. Legible respects headings, lists, bold text, and even fixes broken words at line ends. It also creates a chapter index, even if your PDF doesn’t have one, and shows your converted book page by page before you download.
With Legible, you can upload your PDF, check the chapters, and download the result in AZW3 (for USB transfer), EPUB (for Send to Kindle), or PDF (for comics). The first three downloads are free; after that you can get unlimited downloads for a monthly fee. Your library is private, and files are deleted after 24 hours if not downloaded.
Try Legible here. It works in English, Spanish, and several other languages.
After upload, your book will appear with adjustable text and a chapter index. You can tap chapters in the Kindle’s "Go To" menu, change font size, and use dictionary and notes features.
For more details on formats, see AZW3, EPUB, MOBI, or PDF: Which Format to Use on Kindle.
If your PDF is a scan, Legible uses OCR to turn images into text (in supported languages). For comics, it handles CBZ, CBR, ZIP, and PDF, trimming margins and splitting double pages. You can adjust color for Kindle Colorsoft models. If you want more info on reading comics, check How to Read Comics and Manga on Kindle.
Calibre is a popular free tool for converting and organizing ebooks. However, its manual warns that PDF conversion is tricky, especially with complex layouts, columns, or images. Links and tables of contents may not convert properly. Calibre is excellent for managing your library and converting EPUB to AZW3, but for PDFs, Legible and Send to Kindle are often simpler.
For comics, Kindle Comic Converter (KCC) is another free option. See Alternatives to Kindle Comic Converter for Reading Comics and Manga on Kindle for more details.
Uploading a PDF to Kindle is easy, but for comfortable reading with adjustable text, convert your PDF to AZW3 or EPUB first. Legible lets you do this online, with support for notes, scans, and comics. After conversion, upload by USB or Send to Kindle, and enjoy your book with flowing text and working chapters.
