You can read PDF files on your Kindle in several ways, but the PDF always appears as a fixed page: the whole page shrunk down, which makes the text very small and hard to read. If you want comfortable, flowing text (where you can increase the font size and the text adapts to the screen), you need to convert the PDF to a Kindle book format. Here’s what options you have and how to improve your reading experience based on the type of document.
If you transfer the PDF to your Kindle by USB, the file shows up under "Documents" and you can open it. You’ll see the entire page, just like on your computer, but shrunk. For example, an A4 page on a Kindle Paperwhite appears at less than half its original size, and 12-point text shows up at less than 6 points. You can zoom with two fingers and rotate the screen, but the page stays fixed and you have to move it around to read. This is useful for viewing graphics or tables, but reading long text is uncomfortable.
To read a PDF with flowing text and larger font on your Kindle, you need to convert it to AZW3 (for USB transfer) or EPUB (for sending over the internet). Reflowable text lets you adjust the font size and fills the screen. There are several ways to do this:
Legible is a web converter made in Argentina that reads your PDF and rebuilds it as a Kindle book with reflowable text. It works in your browser—no installation needed—and preserves titles, lists, indents, and graphics. If your PDF is scanned, Legible uses OCR (in several languages) to turn it into text. It also creates a chapter index even if the PDF doesn’t have one. You can preview the finished book on a mock Kindle screen before downloading. Legible gives you AZW3 (for USB), EPUB (for Send to Kindle), and PDF for comics. Conversion and preview are free; downloading is free for the first three books. For a step-by-step guide, see how to send a PDF to Kindle without needing to zoom.
If you’ve converted your PDF to EPUB (with Legible or Calibre), you can send it using Send to Kindle from your browser, desktop app, phone, or by email to your @kindle.com address. The book arrives with its index and you can increase the font size. If the original PDF was just text, this usually works well; if it had columns or was scanned, check the result before reading.
Calibre is free and open source, great for organizing your library and converting EPUB to AZW3. But according to its manual, "PDF documents are one of the worst formats to convert from" and it doesn’t support complex documents, columns, indexes, or tables. If your PDF is simple, you can use Calibre to convert it to EPUB or AZW3, but if it has columns, graphics, or is scanned, results may be poor. For more on this, see why Calibre struggles with complex PDF to Kindle conversion (and better alternatives).
You can send the PDF with Send to Kindle to view it on your Kindle. If you put "convert" in the subject when emailing, Amazon tries to convert the PDF to reflowable text. This works well with simple, continuous text PDFs, but it often loses titles, mixes up columns, and doesn’t handle scans. If your PDF has notes or columns, the result can be confusing. If your PDF doesn’t show up, see PDF sent with Send to Kindle doesn’t show up: causes and solutions.
For comics in PDF, Legible trims margins, splits double pages, and adjusts size for each Kindle model. Complex comics are kept as clear images in their place. For two-column notes, Legible reads them in the correct order and builds the index. For device-specific guides, check:
You can read any PDF on Kindle, but for comfortable, flowing text, it’s best to convert it to AZW3 or EPUB. If your PDF is scanned, you’ll need a converter with OCR, like Legible. If your PDF is just text, you can try Send to Kindle with "convert" or Calibre, but if it has columns or graphics, Legible usually gives better results.
